"...I was impressed by the way the kids I was working with picked up fluency in the audio editing program."

Media Academy

A Single-Media Academy

Your community may have a group that is interested in only one type of media: radio or video, for example. LTTR developed a unique, 3-month program that focused only on developing radio stories suitable for broadcast by Interlochen Public Radio (IPR).

Our Story: The LTTR Radio Academy

The Radio Academy offered hands-on learning opportunities over a 3-month period for six teenagers interested in the natural world and their environment from a journalist's perspective. The teens received training in story-development, research, reporting, and radio production. They went on educational outdoor expeditions to "get the story". The Academy gave them opportunities to publish audio presentations on IPR, ending with a special academy graduation trip to Chicago to study freshwater ecology at the Shedd Aquarium and visit the Chicago Public Radio Station on Navy Pier.

  • The Radio Academy featured three phases:
  • Geography: From "MySpace" to "My Place",
  • Environmental Science: Exploring the Watershed,
  • New Perspectives: Working With Radio.

(A full description and schedule, along with all the planning forms necessary to replicate the Academy, are in the support materials, on the web, and on the disk.)
