Listening to the River Spring Break Workshop

You can use the online registration form to register for the workshop.

Come join us!  Get outside to capture the sights and sounds of the Grand Traverse Bay Watershed.  We will use high end audio recording equipment  and digital cameras to gather multi-media data from our local watershed, then upload and manipulate it using the latest software. You will learn and examine key watershed concepts and have the opportunity to produce short explanatory pieces for posting on the Listening to the River website's interactive "MediaScape". Your audio pieces might even be broadcast on Interlochen Public Radio!

Daily Schedule

Overview: Listening to the River staff, naturalists and media producers will guide participants through all workshop activities. All events start and end at Land Information Access Association, 342 Munson Ave., Traverse City, Michigan.

 

March 31, DAY ONE: 8:30 - 4:30  Focus: Introduction to all workshop elements

Morning (@ LIAA)

Get acquainted activities
Overview of the projects and expectations for participants
Introduction to watersheds viahands-on activities
Introduction to Equipment (GPS units, digital cameras, audio recording decks)

 

Lunch - provided

 

Afternoon Field Trip (GT Commons)

Watershed component experiences:
GPS game, Concept Hike, Nature listening and observation activities
Practice using equipment to capture nature data
Introduction to telling media stories
Reflection, discussion of the day's events


April 1, DAY TWO: 8:30 - 4:30  Focus: Media software, storytelling and sense of place

Morning (at LIAA)

Guided download of previous days' media collection
Showcase with watershed characteristics game
Revisit storytelling/media production needs

Lunch - provided 

Afternoon Field Trip (Beitner Creek Natural Area)

Sense of Place activities combined with media collection

 

April 2, DAY THREE: 8:30 - 4:30 Focus: Media Production

This day is spent in the lab at LIAA completing media pieces that offer a glimpse and information about key watershed characteristics. Short field trips to collect additional data are optional. Content and technical experts will assist participants in researching and producing pieces such as photo essays with descriptive text and/or audio stories. Finished pieces will be posted on the LTTR web site MediaScape section.

Workshop Follow-up Options:

Open labs and media mentoring will be available for participants who want to refine their media pieces into a full-blown broadcast for IPR.

An evening or weekend Showcase of all the participants will be offered, date TBD.
